How to change your Firefox UserAgent String using about:config

The steps detailed here will allow you to change the UserAgent string of your Firefox web browser to masquerade as any other browser or bot on the net. The changes made using the following steps will be reset to default upon shutting down of your firefox browser.

Step 1
Entering the Config page

Type: about:config in the firefox address field

Step 2
Find the useragent string

Type: general.useragent.extra.firefox under the Filter bar

Step 3
Modifying the Preference String

general.useragent.extra.firefox: Right-click and select Modify

Type in your new useragent string. ie. Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) for IE6

Step 4
Verifying the results

You can test if you have successfully changed your Useragent by using the following test.

URL ::: Test HERE

Reset back to default config

Right-click on the Preference String and select reset

This was tested under

Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Browser: Firefox 2.0
