Howto fix Firefox 3.5 slow startup

Posted by: Admin In: Browser|Tutorials

If launching your Firefox 3.5 is taking longer then you believe it should. Use the following guide to speed up your Firefox. Experience bootup speed improvement from 5 mins to just 30 seconds.

The cause of the slow startup is due to a strange implementation within Firefox which scans the Temporary folder within Windows to generate randomness. Unfortunately as some temporary folders have not been cleared in decades, this buildup of files causes Firefox 3.5 to take forever booting up.

How to Clear your temp directory.

Step 1:  Goto START > Run…
Step 2: Type “%temp%
Step 3: Select all files in the directory and delete. Don’t worry if you encounter any files that is reported in use. Just skip that file and continue deleting from there.

Verified to work on the following:

  1. Firefox 3.5  on a Windows XP Pro SP2
  2. Firefox 3.5 on a Windows XP Pro SP3
